'Activity Search' results issue

Hello:
  Whenever I do an Activity Search I cannot export my results as memberships, only as contacts. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, but I need to export each member's 'membership expiration date' which I cannot export if they are considered 'contacts' and not 'members.' Does anyone know of a way that I can change this so that my activity search results will be members instead of contacts?

I hope that I explained this clearly enough.

can you do this via Adv Search and then 'view results as Members'? (in top right of Adv Search screen) worth knowing about even if it doesn't help you this time
