Civi 4.0.8 upgrade help

So to cut a long story short I am on Joomla 2.5 with latest version of PHP and mysql trying to upgrade from Civi 4.0.8 to the latest version.

Normal method to update in guide FAIL.

Tried to install fresh version of JOOMLA and latest civi, works until I import the data, then I seem to have issues regarding the user tables not being the same, so I import the user table from the old version of joomla and still it doesnt work.

Can anyone advise me? Would I be best off upgrading one version at a time till I get to the latest one?
