Replies to bulk messages are blank
December 18, 2013, 03:39:40 am
I'm working on an issue with a Wordpress/Civi site. We have an issue when a bulk email is sent out via CiviMail. My client likes to have the 'replies tracked and forwarded' options turned on, so that when some replies, as I understand it the message gets sent to the bounce handling email account, where CiviCRM parses the message to log that a reply was made, and forwards the message on to the original sender. My client receives the forwarded reply message, but the email they get is blank, i.e. it has no content. If we look at the Gmail account (we are using a Gmail account to act as the bounce handling account), the reply is there, and looks fine.

My client uses Office365 for their email. I understand that there are issues with Office365 mail and CiviCRM in that Office365 is unable to cope with the fact that legitimate email might originate from a source other than itself.

I would expect that this limitation with Office365 would result in problems when sending mail to addresses in your domain (e.g. example.org) from CiviCRM when using a "From:" address in the same domain. Office365 would assume that the message is spam and block it. I've seen this behaviour with other CiviCRM implementations I've worked with.

However, in the case of a forwarded reply, as far as I can see the reply message is being sent from the bounce handler account to the original sender, so it going from a gmail.com address to an example.org address, so I can't see why Office365 would object. Indeed, the whole Office365 thing might be a red herring.

Anyone else seen anything like this?

Update on this issue. The more I look into it, the more it looks to me as if CiviCRM is the culprit here.
I've done some test mailings, with full access to the sending email account, the recipient email account and the bounce handling email account, and nothing appears to be amiss, in that the message sent from CiviCRM is received correctly by the recipient; the reply sent form the recipient to the bounce handling account looks fine; and if I send a reply directly to the sending account (rather than via the bounce handler) then the sending account receives the reply correctly. Also, if I send from the bounce handling account to the original sender account, that message is received fine. The only situation where we are seeing a problem is when we are asking CiviCRM to forward the reply on to the From address specified in the original mailing. In this instance the message is indeed being forwarded, but has no content.

I can't test this on the demo sites. Has anyone else come across this issue?

I have also been trying to get to the bottom of this for a number of weeks. Started having problems as soon as I started using Office365 to manage our email (perhaps after migrating to a new dedicated server with new software etc.). I am running the latest version of Drupal 7, and just updated to CiviCRM 4.4.4 for sanity.

Have you discovered the root cause of the problems yet?
Perhaps we can debug/compare possible causes/solutions.

We are experiencing the same results as your client, apart from the few emails that are NOT blank after being delivered in the same way. I have also tried/tested using an alternative domain name and delivery method that avoids Office365. Some emails were blank?!!

I am starting to investigate everything; DNS, Postfix, SendMail, Email encoding...

Any assistance would be appreciated!
