Groups as the only option for CiviMail
April 17, 2008, 03:23:35 am
Hey - I just wonder if there is a need (yes I may be up for it) to go through the documentation, eg http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Tags+vs.+Groups+vs.+Custom+Fields and make it really, really clear that if you are planning on setting up any 'grouping' that will then be used for civiMail, that civimail requires it to be a group. Yes i understand that one can create smart groups etc from custom data et al. But it has really only struck me now that this is something of a fundamental characteristic of groups and I am not sure that is well advertised.
Other place I spotted is eg that on the CIviMail documentation it seemed to me that it is only when you get to the Send Mail instructions (ie well down the track) that http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/2.+Select+Recipients has that old yellow box saying Recipients must be in Groups

Yes I had the same experience.  In fact I had a couple of false starts before I learned that you can't just use any group, it has to be designated a "mailing list" group on the Manage Groups page.

True but at least you can reset that as an afterthought.

Peter - I think adding a {tip} like this to the page you noted (groups vs. ...) and upfront in CiviMail doc would be excellent :-)
