Weird cron-related issue
December 19, 2013, 12:30:12 am
I've got my main CiviCRM cron task running every 15 minutes, and by and large everything seems ot be working fine. Looking through the scheduled job logs I can see nothing of concern. However my cron job is set up to email me if there is output (and if everything is working smoothly there shouldn't be), so I find it a useful way to spot problems.
What I'm seeing over the last couple of days, about 4 or 5 times on each day, I'm getting notified of output form the cron job. The output is :

500 read timeout

I've gone through the logs and can't see anything that might indicate what's going on here. The timing of the notifications indicates that it is linked to a scheduled job that is running every time the cron is fired.

The scheduled jobs that are enabled are:
  • Activity processor (hourly)
  • Geocoder (daily)  - and I'm seeing some "over quota" messages on this occasionally.
  • Bounce fetcher (always)
  • Clean up (Hourly)
  • Mailing scheduler (always)
  • Membership status processor (always) - although could probably go to daily.
  • Participant status processor (always)
  • Rebuild smart group cache (always)
As I say nothing shows in the logs for any of these jobs that might indicate the 500 error.
Any pointers most welcome.

I looked into this issue on the site in question. I can not determine what exactly may have caused the "500 read timeout" error. However I would recommend that you disable temporarily the scheduled Geocoder job to see whether this will make any difference. I am guessing that when the cron job tries to get data from the remote server, that server is not responding with sufficient alacrity.

Thanks Hershel
I've disabled the suggested scheduled job, and we'll see if that helps.
