Drupal Multisite installation problems
December 19, 2013, 04:23:49 am
I am moving an existing Drupal 7 site to a multi-site setup. The main site, site1 let's say, was already running civicrm. Upon moving that and editing civicrm.settings.php it seems to be fine.

However, when I try to install CiviCRM on site2 it doesn't finish install, gives me the "an unexpected error occurred" but no errors in the logs or in Apache.

In other forum topics, I see people being pointed to http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC42/Multi+Site+Installation, but I don't think that's what I want because I am just sharing the codebase - the sites each have their own databases for their own Civi installs.

Is there any documentation on this anywhere? Any suggestions on what might be wrong or what I might need to do? Thanks!

Try installing in default and then move the settings file if necessary. Or try installing elsewhere (a different site) and then copy that DB and the settings file--basically do a migration of a brand new CiviCRM install.

Thanks Hershel, will try that. One question - do you recommend I do the failed install first so that on the Drupal side civi is at least turned on? Or just keep civi completely uninstalled and then migrate my clean install tables over and just turn civi on through a direct database query? Ideas on which is the "less corrupt" approach to this?

Corruption-free approach is to migrate a CiviCRM DB and settings table and then enable CiviCRM from the modules page, like any other module.

I have a similar need and would like to understand how does upgrades work in such setup?

1) When Civicrm is upgraded, it needs its DB to be upgraded. Will it upgrade "all" civicrm DBs of the muliitsite?

2) How many multi-sites can I have in 1 codebase? is there a practical limit? ( I am on civihositng.com)

You must run the upgrader on each site individually.

This is a limit of your server resources mostly.
