illegal string offset error

When I try to mark a contribution (for an event) as completed and check the "send receipt" box. I get a warning message.

The email received is also gibberish. This is what I get in my email:

not sure what version u r on, but if on 4.3, i'd recommend u upgrade to 4.4.x. Faintly recollect an error like that, which was rectified in later releases

Not too sure what's the problem, but when I removed the price sets and replaced it with manual options, the error did not appear.
