Automatic discounts are almost perfect for what I want to do. We want to give everyone who signs up for a new membership to get a one time discount.

The trouble is that we do NOT want to give discounts to anyone who is already a past or current member. As we will be importing a large database of past and present members, is there a way to let Discount know not to give that discount to them?

This may be a bit of a hack, but I just tried it and you can enter in negative discount amounts. So, for instance, I set up a discount of -$25 for General Members applied to General Memberships. Nonmembers will see a price of $100, but if you already have a General Membership, you'll see a price of $125. It does show the discount of -$25 in parens, so you may want to hide that with some JS or CSS.

Just because it's possible doesn't mean it's the best way :-) There may be something less hacky than this. (Of course if you have coding capabilities you can write an extension to do this more cleanly.)

It might help you to create a smart group of members with status "new" - you might be able to base discounts on that.
