we had an event with 512 partipcants for an event, which we closed at 512  the event showed me on 1.9 (512) show max 512, which is good.  I am looking at it now, after the 2.0 upgrade and now it says 232 show .. but when  i click on the 232 and it says found 512 particpants.  i researched this and found that the number 232 = the number of particpants which have a status as  registered.  i have partiapnts with other status in there, looks like thats not being counted.. was this intentional ?

In 2.0, we definitely just show "Registered" in the dash board count (and my recollection is that this was also the behavior in 1.9 - perhaps your data looks different because some participants status was updated after the event ?? to Attended ??).

In any case, starting w/ 2.1 you'll be able to control which statuses are "counted" for the dashboard (and for the Max Participants) - so that should make it much more flexible for how different folks want to see / use this:
