Allow CiviCRM Users to change their Username
January 06, 2014, 10:45:38 am
We have been using CiviCRM to manage our subscriber list for some time, and recently decided to add a "members only" section to the site. Fortunately, we synched CiviCRM accounts with WordPress, so the accounts are already in place. Unfortunately we created random usernames for all the users when we set up the site not knowing we would be doing this.

So now we're wondering if anyone knows of a way to allow users to change their username. CiviCRM allows creation of the username when a membership page is completed, but the process of changing it doesn't exist.

Has anyone tried this? Or know of a way to allow it?

Users are not managed by CiviCRM at all - it's all handled by WP.
What I can't understand is why did you create random users in the first place? CiviCRM contacts do not need to be WP users.

It was set up to manage synching between WP, CiviCRM and MailChimp with the WP account being the master.  We knew we might want to move to a Member site at some point, but didn't think about the problem with usernames and login. It's now set up so people can log in with either user or email, but new users have to create a username. That has caused some folks to want to change their username.

Well amongst the millions of WP plugins out there I'm sure there's something that will let you do that.

You'd think, but most only allow the admins to do it.  Guess we'll have to do it from scratch.
