Contact Import not working
January 09, 2014, 01:15:54 am
We have been trying to get CiviCRM working with Wordpress 3.8 and CiviCRM 4.4.0. The install has been successful.

However, when I try to import the contacts from the old system via a csv file, after selecting the file and selecting the appropriate date format etc and 'Continue'ing to Step 2 (Match Fields) I don't get a list of the fields and possible matches. It lists nothing, just the buttons for '<<Previous' 'Continue>>' and 'Cancel' in 2 rows, one directly below the other. I've attached a copy of the screen.

I've even tried it with an export file from CiviCRM with a few manually created records and it still does the same. My colleague reports a similar problem where it has the Match Fields step but doesn't do anything when he goes to Step 3. However I'm not sure if that relates to Import Contacts or the Import Memberships. I did try the Import Memberships function (a dry run) and it did give me the Match Fields screen. Of course I need to import the contacts first before importing their membership information.

Is it a version issue with 4.4.0 and Wordpress 3.8? Problem occurs in IE, Firefox, and Chrome, latest versions of each.

Thanks in Advance.

Hi Keith - welcome to civiland - from another kiwi

One of your issues sounds like something people hit when they are using a poorly formatted csv.

I would suggest the following - grab a small chunk of your spreadsheet and pasted in to a new doc and save as csv and then try importing from that.

I know we sometimes hit the issue that if a csv has been saved, then edited and resaved, it does not work.

Good luck

In case it helps anyone. I managed to get things working with a different install on a different server. I installed Wordpress 3.8.1 and CiviCRM 4.4.3 and the import works fine.

The CiviCRM version in the original post was 4.4.0.

I don't know if it was an issue with the versions of WP (3.8.1) and CiviCRM (4.4.0) or the hosting environment but I can say that importing with WP 3.8.1 and CiviCRM 4.4.3 works just fine.

If it helps.

If you are able, it'd be interesting to compare the output of a phpinfo.php file with this code only on both servers -

Code: [Select]
<?php phpinfo(); ?>
That might show that a particular setting can mess with uploads. (Or it might be that provider A didn't support PHP processes running long enough to process a large CSV. Or the moon might have shifted quadrants.)

Anyway - thanks for reporting back - it's much nicer to know a person found their way forward than to wonder .... and wonder ... whatever happened to that guy who asked about that thing? :)
