Multiple membership types for one user?

Hi, I'm researching options for expanding my Drupal site to manage CRM as well as memberships. We have more than one membership program, and our users (organizations) can sign up for more than one kind of membership, each billing annually or quarterly, on its own schedule. Most off-the-shelf membership management systems only allow each user to have one membership type. Does CiviCRM allow more than one? I've spent sooo many hours researching this with sooo many products, I'm just hoping for a quick answer on this one feature, which is so fundamental to our operation and so lacking in other software. Thanks for any guidance you can offer!

Yes, but you will need to create a "dummy" organisation for each "extra" membership type.  You first memerbship can be for "XZY Org" but then you will need to create extra organisations for each possible concurrent memebrship  eg. organisations called, say,  "XYZ Org Gym", "XYZ Org Pony Club".

This is purely an administrative feature and your members do not need to be aware of  these dummy organisations.

Actually joanne you can create multiple membership types on a single organisation - no need for dummy orgs. Each membership type can have it's own price and length and rules for renewal.

leahcooper Have a try on http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/ and read http://book.civicrm.org/user/current/membership/setup/ if you get stuck.

Hope Civi works for you - it does membership really well.

Davem, I agree you can have multiple memberships types per organisation,  but each contact can have only one active membership with a particular organisation.   

I think this post is about allowing a contact (user) to have more than one membership type at the same time.

Unless something has changed in the last month, at the moment that can only be done using dummy organisations, as post #9 in http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,25694.msg132519.html makes clear.

Oh, I think I can make this work by setting up an "Organization" for each membership program. Tested it on the demo site and seems to work just fine. The demo site is really amazing, so much better than sandboxes I've used for commercial programs. Thanks so much for the quick responses!
