Advanced Search Missing Contacts

I'm new here.  Logging in to CiviCRM as Administrator with all authorities I have having difficulty with the Advanced Search function.
Advanced Search for Contact Type, Individual, [Type], yields 413 records.  There are 431 records with this Contact Type.  Because for this particular type the names include their numbers I can determine which are missing, and they all appear to be properly loaded.  What's happening?

are any of the missing ones in Trash? - there is a checkbox on Adv Search for 'search in trash'

No.  They are all active contacts, not in trash.
