comments field for registration or renewal form

What's the best way to add a field for users to add their questions or comments when signing up as a new member or renewing their membership?

I tried to use the field that linked to a contact's notes, but the thank you email that was sent out will be based on the first note in the contact, and not what was entered in the form.

Maybe a custom field?

I guess that works. Just wondering whether there is a built-in civicrm feature for this.

nothing built in - but a custom field will just show back to the user what they entered previously

you can try a multiple record field and see if that behaves as you want - ie it adds a new version each time

otherwise you could try a custom field on either the Membership or Contribution since these will be 'new' with each renewal.

Hmm.. I think adding a custom field for contributions sound just right.
