Is it possible to Subscribe to a smart group mailing list
April 20, 2008, 07:05:52 pm
It is my understanding that a smart group is dynamicly created each time it is used. That being said can someone still subscribe to a smart group based mailing list? If so I realize they would do this through a from but they more then likely wouldn't meet the same selection criteria as the smart group so how would this be notated in CiviCRM and the Database?

Smart group are just a criteria, members of which are dynamically fetched.
For subscribing via email address one can not subscribe to smart group (as they are not listed on subscribe form).
Only normal groups are allowed to be subscribed via email address.

Actually, I think you CAN add / subscribe contacts "explicitly" to a Smart Group...
If you set the group's visibility to "Public..." it will show up on the Mailing Subscriptions form (http://.../civicrm/mailing/subscribe?reset=1), and if you include the "Group(s)" field in a profile it will also show up there. Also, using the "Groups" tab from the View Contact screen you can add a contact to a Smart Group.

Smart groups consist of:
- all contacts meeting the smart group's search criteria
- MINUS any of the above who have been unsubscribed
- PLUS any contacts that have been explicitly added (as noted above)

Added or removed contacts for a smart group are recorded in the civicrm_group_contact table with the applicable status.
