Under what circumstances does CiviCRM send this reply:

This is an automated reply from an un-attended mailbox. Please send any inquiries to the contact email address listed on our web-site.

to someone?

Answer is:

Quote
Auto-respond to Replies: This option allows you to send a specific automatic reply to anybody who replies to your mailing. You need to set up an autoresponder ahead of time in Mailings > Headers, Footers, and Automated Messages.

as per http://book.civicrm.org/user/current/email/everyday-tasks/

Your post intrigued me, as I had not looked at this before - and had noticed that people were (needlessly) replying to bulk emails.  So I gave it a try, replied to a bulk email and got this from cron -

Failed Processing: Re: Sample CiviMail Newsletter, Action: r, Job ID: 11, Queue ID: 8, Hash: d34430d0e5080699. Reason: DB Error: syntax error

Any idea why?  I have the sample auto respond message set up, and cron normally is fine.  I couldn't see any documentation on any set up that's needed for this so hard to debug.

I also don't know how this works. I have a site where the bounce processor was turned off for 2 years. When I turned it back on, people got this autoresponse from (apparently) old messages. I moved the rest of the messages out of the Inbox to avoid that. But now if we send emails to the bounce processor, we get no auto-response.

I can't figure out why those old emails DID get one.

I tried an auto response again, this time with an extra email address that would be bounced.  The bounce worked correctly but I still get the cron error message and no auto response.  I can't figure it out!

Did you email the address directly or did you Reply To a mailer?

I would check the CiviCRM.*.log file and get more details on the DB error

a DB error is fatal and hence u wont get any response after that error

Here's the error log, attached.  I'm none the wiser - messages about  the preferred mail format, which for both contacts in the group is not set (i.e. defaulted)

I think I've located the problem - lines 218 and 219 are missing a comma at the end of the SQL statement in reply.php.  ;)  This is located in all/modules/civicrm/CRM/Mailing/Event/BAO/reply.php

I have raised problem  http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-14150  I've flagged it as major as it is breaking some function in Civi.
