Start Date in the Future?
January 28, 2014, 08:53:53 pm
My non-profit has monthly dues, however members often pay ahead by several months.  I tried importing several memberships, but received 'membership status cannot be calculated' errors.  I understand why 'member since' might not let us enter a date in the future, as that is basically the date that a member paid for their dues.  How do I make it so that I can set a 'start date' in the future though?  I don't really understand a good reason why a membership can't be set up to start in the future.

You probably need to bypass the validation, so customize CiviCRM?

Yea, I'm able to manually add memberships whose start dates are in the future, but for some reason civicrm doesn't seem to like importing them.  Funky.

OK, so in particular, civicrm will import memberships whose 'start date' is in the future, unless it is more than a year ahead of the 'member since' date.  I'm going to see if I can figure out a workaround, because hand  entering 500 memberships because of this would be stupid.

Please double check your membership status settings.   Is there a valid status for the situation you describe where start date is more than a year after member since?

Yea, actually the status rules needed to be fixed, I had a gap inbetween two status rules.  One had an end date of three years, and the next one should have had a start date of 3 years, but instead said 4 years.

I don't think it will try to calculate status if you pass in start date, join date, end date & status so you might be able to bypass the problem by passing in status or status_id in your import
