Colour-coding custom fields?

Hello there,

I'm developing a site for a client who are keen on having a set of custom fields colour-coded to match the system they use in their office. If you can picture the little rainbow coloured stickers on the side of file folders in a doctor's office, that's the general idea. If I tick a box for X disease they want that disease's colour to appear somewhere on the database record.

What's the best way to do this?

I would use an "extra" template file as per http://book.civicrm.org/developer/current/techniques/templates/
