Using profiles to prevent duplicate contacts

I am trying to use profiles to prevent duplicate contacts but i am unable to determine which de-dupe rule it is looking at. Under the info tab on the profile de-dupe option it says

In all cases, the check for an existing matching contact uses the default "Individual Strict Duplicate Matching Rule"

There are no "strict" dupe rules available - only general, supervised and unsupervised.

Any thoughts?

The unsupervised rule is the one that will be used. Particularly with front end forms. The default matches email only. You can create a more complex rule and mark it as unsupervised and it will take the place of the default rule.
