paypal standard and membership duration of more than a year

I seem to have encountered a bug. When someone uses paypal standard to pay for a 3 year membership (I'm using price sets. The basic membership is defined for 1 year), the membership is extended by only 1 year instead. Anyone else encounter this?

I switched from paypal standard to paypal express and it worked ok now. Don't know whether that's the cause.
