Long expired member Rejoins
February 04, 2014, 06:03:50 pm
Hi Folks,

Scenario: John Smith buys 1-year membership to JD Organization on Jan. 1, 2012 expiring on Dec. 31, 2012. Even with the best automated renewal emails, he ignores them and lets his membership lapse. JD organization has a rolling membership term

It's now Feb. 4, 2014. Using the new member sign-up form on the web site, he joins JD Organization expecting his membership to expire on Feb. 3, 2015. His email address has NOT changed since his initial membership. He discovers that his membership expires on Dec. 31, 2013.

Question: am I describing correctly what CiviCRM would do in such a situation? If I am correct, any ideas on how to deal with that scenario?

Thanks,

Shai Gluskin

I would expect the scenario to work like that, but I would test it. My return question would be: what would you want to happen in this situation?

What happens when an expired member 'renews' depends on your Membership Status rules ( )

Can you copy and paste the information from Administer>CiviMember>Membership Status Rules here?

@joanne,

Here is a screenshot of Administer>CiviMember>Membership Status Rules. Did you need the detail for each one?

Oh wait: does it work like this? an expired membership cannot be renewed. So if we set a membership to expire 3 months after its end date and then the person signs up 4 months after the end date; in that case a new membership would be created instead of renewing the old one. Is that how it works?

Basically, depending on what you mean by new membership.

Civi only creates one membership of a given type (Ie there will only be one membership ID for that person for that membership type which means only one line in the memberships tab on their contact record)

There are 3 dates for each membership line (ID):  Member since, which never changes, Start date and end date.

When someone who has had a membership makes another membership payment, the start date may change depending on the value in the member column for the membership status in effect when the 'renewal' fee is paid.

In your attachment, New, Current and grace all have a Yes in the Member column.  So someone who renews when their membership has the status new, current or grace will keep their existing start date and have their  end date extended by the duration of the membership.

But someone with the membership status of expired, which has a No in the Member column will get a new member start date and a full membership term from that new start date when they 'renew'.
