looks like I have no outbound email using civimail. Do i need to setup the cron job?

could be. if you checked the "send immediately" option at the end of the civimail screens and nothing happened, then yes you probably need to set up the cron.

Are there any special instructions for this? at the CiviSMTP site it says nothing of how to set it up. I'm assuming I need to run Imap2soap?

doing a search for: civimail cronjob site:civicrm.org
gives the following url: http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=civimail+cronjob+site%3Acivicrm.org&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

where the first entry goes to:

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/CiviMail+Installation

and from the TOC

It does help to do a search before posting a question. saves everyone a fair amount of time

if you are using CiviSMTP you do not need to run imap2soap
