Starting with clean database
February 09, 2014, 04:03:52 pm
Aloha from Hawai‘i Island, Hawai‘i USA! We are evaluating CiviCRM and rather than do the online demo we decided to install CiviCRM on our shared-hosting web server. Civi has its own directory and Wordpress build and has been upgraded to v4.4.4. However there are already ~200 sample contact records already in the database, which is great for testing with "fake" data, but how do we clear all the data once we're ready to start inputting and configuring our own?

Hi there!

During installation, Civi has a checkbox asking if you'd like to load the sample data.  You can reinstall without loading the sample data, or, if you're comfortable doing this, you can go into the civicrm directory on your server, locate the "sql" subdirectory, and import the "civicrm.sql" file - that'll give you a clean start.

I almost recommended searching for all contacts, then selecting "Delete Permanently" - but that won't delete the sample events, campaigns, custom fields, etc., so I wouldn't recommend that because you'll likely end up with some unintended cruft.

Finally - CiviCRM is fine to test on shared webhosting, but unless it's webhosting with CiviCRM expertise (like the excellent Civihosting or Cividesk), I wouldn't recommend running more than a few hundred contacts off of shared hosting, and even then, only very good shared hosting!  If you experience performance problems, compare to the demo server to make sure it's not your host which is the issue.

Wow, mahalo for all the info! My webmaster did the initial installation, hence the sample data, unbeknownst to me...which is good for starters, for sure. Thanks for the tip on how to replace the .sql file.

We will probably end up with 4-5,000 contacts, and realize we may need to move Civi at some point. Our site doesn't have a ton of traffic (relatively speaking) and we have a great host...so we may be ok...but we'll keep an eye on performance as Civi AND our new website are built together.

Thanks JonGold!
