Has anyone considered the practicalities of adding a 'Create Case for each contact' action to the list of available actions when viewing search results? We're coming up against a requirement that seems to mandate it, elsewise there's an awful lot of manual labour involved creating cases...

It sounds easy enough to do as an extension. You need to implement hook_civicrm_searchTasks https://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/hook_civicrm_searchTasks then create a class and template for the form to select the case type.
