Dedupe rules in Import versus Find and Merge Duplicate Contacts rules
February 14, 2014, 07:35:33 am
I am trying to import an e-mail list that only has e-mail addresses.
In Find and Merge Duplicate Contacts, we have a rule for E-mail only that is Strict for Individuals (we're on 4.4.15).
In Import Contacts, that E-mail only Strict rule does not appear in the dropdown list for Dedupe rules, *but* a rule entitled E-mail only-4 - Fuzzy does - and that Fuzzy rule does not appear in Find and Merge Duplicate Contacts. The label/name for the Strict rule is correct - it is not mislabeled as Fuzzy - it just does not appear in the Import Contact Dedupe rule dropdown.
So - my understanding is that rules created in Find and Merge Duplicates are the only rules that should appear in the Import Contact Dedupe rule dropdown. That's not my case.
Any ideas on how to fix this? I'm still looking in Admin settings for any other way to fix this.
Thanks for any help.

These rules in the Import screen are rather cryptically named sometimes, and do not always translate to the name you see in the Find and Merge screen.

However, if you compare the id number  (Google Chrome "inspect" or "Firebug" in Firefox will help you do this) you will achieve a match.  When in doubt, create a new 'general' rule with a distinctive name and use that.  It is ok if two rules have the same fields and criteria.

Try CiviTeacher: the online video tutorial CiviCRM learning library.

Thanks, the ID number is getting me part of the way there - I now see the E-mail Strict rule in Dedupe rules in Import Contacts after editing the former Email Fuzzy rule which had a different name in Find and Merge Duplicates list of rules. I'm doing the e-mail list import using that new rule but this seems kind of screwy and not as described in in the "help bubble" text for Dedupe rule, below:

"If you have selected one of the dedupe options besides "no duplicate checking," CiviCRM will use a predefined dedupe rule to determine possible matches for your imported records. Existing dedupe rules may be reviewed, and new rules created, by visiting Contacts > Find and Merge Duplicate Contacts. When selecting a dedupe rule, be sure to choose one that includes fields contained in your import file. Also be aware that the update and fill options could have significant impact on your existing data. You should define and select a rule that is strict enough to ensure there are no false positive matches."

Joemci,

You don't need dedupe rules. CiviCRM will not import the same email address to more than one record.

But maybe I misunderstood your situation...
