latest vs LTS?
February 14, 2014, 08:03:18 am
We are managing multiple CiviCRM 2.2 (ack!) sites in Drupal and looking to upgrade (finally). We've been remiss to upgrade until now because of a lot of custom code, and we are now committed to wiping that custom code completely in favor of the new features available in 4.x. We also plan on moving to WordPress.

My question is, for organizations that have no technical capacity to do upgrades on their own and without budgets to pay implementers to do regular upgrades, would you recommend upgrading to 4.2.10 LTS or to the latest version?

Is LTS still being supported? This post https://civicrm.org/blogs/eileen/4210-lts-release suggests it will only be supported until the end of 2013. Any chance we can expect a stable version with back-porting of bug fixes until, say, 5.0? Wouldn't that be ideal?

Under the conditions you describe I would suggest the 4.2 LTS.  Why you suggest 4.2.10 specifically, I do not know, as 4.210 is insecure.  The current 4.2 LTS is 4.2.15 (or 16 even).

What future for support for LTS there is determined by the volunteer efforts of those who support the LTS.  The more help they/we get, the longer LTS will be supported, or the more likely future LTS versions (4.4, 4.5) will exist.

If you have questions or concerns I suggest you direct your questions and support (financial, volunteer or otherwise) directly to the LTS team.

If your organizations cannot afford at least once-yearly updates of CiviCRM, they should consider alternatives to CiviCRM, to be frank.  That is my opinion and mine alone.

The reason I'm mentioning 4.2.10 is because that's the one I see on the release blog. Where should I look for the latest on LTS?

Always check Sourceforge or the Downloads page for the latest stable releases.

I would actually recommend the latest stable 4.4 release under your circumstances. 4.2LTS is approaching EOL so it's just going to be another job upgrading in the near future. If you're taking the trouble to upgrade right now, might as well go all the way.
LTS was mainly for people who are already using 4.2 and don't have time/money to upgrade to something newer.

Thanks Coleman, a valid perspective and suggestion, and not mutually exclusive with mine.   Considering they last updated CiviCRM in 2009, the projected "end of life" of their production release is clearly not a priority for these people.   Remembering there is a new release of Civi about once a month, there's always a reason to make an upgrade if a person wants to find a reason.    I think craftee123 no matter what you do, update to something... please.

I agree with Coleman. If you are upgrading I would upgrade to 4.4. I recommend LTS releases for people already on that version of CiviCRM. ie. if you are on 4.2 then the LTS is a good option. But if you are upgrading anyway I would go to 4.4. There are some nice features / extensions available in 4.4 - which ones appear will depend of your organisation and it's a shame to go to the effort of upgrading without getting those.

I am somewhat expecting an LTS on 4.4 although Coleman thinks 4.5 would be a better candidate and it is by no means decided.

Eileen - I'm sure it's hard to predict, but when do you expect a decision on the next LTS?
