importing current memberships
February 18, 2014, 06:23:24 pm
We are about to cut over our administration system from FilmakerPro to CiviCRM. I have successfully imported our contacts but am having trouble with memberships. I have a .csv file of 1,411 individual memberships, keyed by Contact Id. I am attempting to import these as new memberships including the fields: Contact Id, Membership Start Date, Membership Expiration Date, Member Since and Membership Type.

This works fine for all but the current memberships: i.e. those with a start date of 1/07/2013 (we have fixed memberships from 1 July to 30 June the following year). For these I get the error "The membership cannot be saved, no valid membership status for given dates".

I have tried all possible combinations of excluding 1 or 2 of the above 3 dates. The only combination which works is importing Membership Start Date and Member Since. However, in this case, the import routine computes the Membership Expiration Date as one year after Member Since and marks the membership as Expired.

If I edit an example record to make Membership Start Date = Member Since = 1/07/2013 and try to import it, it fails with the usual message.

I have also fooled around with doing an update import to fix the Membership Expiration Date and overide Expired with Current but this fails with the usual message.

I cant see why, say, Membership Start Date= 1/07/2013, Membership Expiration Date= 30/06/2014, Member Since= 20/03/1998 isn't valid with a derived status of Current.

What am I missing?

First thing to look at are the settings for the membership status of current. (Administer>civimember>membership status rules)

In particular is  Start Event* set to "member since" or "start date"? You will need it to be set to "Start date".

Thanks.

The Current-status start-event is indeed start-date not member-since and the end-event is end-date.

Well, if you are really using 4.1 as your profile says, it could be a bug that has been fixed since then.  you could check on http://issues.civicrm.org/jira to see.

4.4.4 is the current version and 4.1 became out-of-date in September 2012 with the release of 4.2.   It is a shame you are about to switch to a new system that is so far behind in terms of functionality.

Point taken. I will look into the issues and upgrading to a later version.
