Organization Profile and CiviContribute
May 29, 2007, 11:36:42 am
Is there a way to use a profile which contains Organization fields in a Contribute page?  In Configure Contribution Page,  I tried using Custom Page Elements.  I selected the profile, but it does not display the profile fields when I test drive the Contribute page.

You can not mix Individual and Organization fields in a Profile when it is used to collect input (as it would be in a Contribute page). We are working on an enhancement in 1.8 that would allow folks to include an "Employer" field in Individual profiles. The "Employer" would become an Organization contact (or match to an existing Organization with the same name), and an employee-employer relationship would be created.

We are shooting to include this capability for Contribution page profiles - but this is not definite yet.

Thanks for the update.  For now, I will keep organization data in Individual custom fields.  Thanks for continuing the work on CiviCRM.  It's really a fantastic piece of software.

So, does this mean that CiviContribute Online Contribution pages are designed to only work correctly for Individual contacts?
I'm trying to create a separate Membership page for Organizations.

-What if I include a profile in the Online Contribution pages which only has Organization fields? Can this work? (This doesn't seem to work completely correctly for me-- not all the fields are displayed.)

-If I am an anonymous user and I sign up for membership, a new Individual contact is created. I had hoped (naively) that including Organization fields would result in an Organization contact being created. Is there a way for the Contribution pages to create an Organization contact? Perhaps something similar to specifying a ctype when creating a user....?

-Robin, how are you keeping organization data in Individual custom fields?  Are all your organizations individuals then?

We don't currently handle an "Organization" creating a contribution or signing up for a membership online. Given that it's always a person representing an organization - we haven't quite figured out how this is best handled in a generalized manner. If you / your organization is interested in working on this area, let us know.

so far the closest I have gotten to making this work is
One..Using drupal and logintobogin the user signs up for the page, is auto logged in, and is redirected to civicontribute for individual profile settings
Two..They fill in the civicont form and an Individual is made in civi, civi group is set, civi member etc
Three..From here they can now click a link to finish their sign up which is a civicontribute form that sets them up for an organization.
The only thing is at this point it make them only and org removing their ind contact data.
But that is all I really want.
Three steps is some what long.

David,

I agree with the idea that it's a person signing up for an org, but not so much with the part where you cannot add org profiles to the information about the organization someone is signing up for.   Knowing the primary contact information for the org they represent is helpful, but you may want to know more, like issues they work on or their annual budget (in order to determine annual membership fees).

As it stands when you add address info for you org that info goes into that org's record seem like it would be feasible to add a profile to the org info form.

With the addition of permissioning on a relationship (added in 2.1) - there is a foundation for linking a logged in user to configurable organization profiles for "their" organizations. Currently this is "built-in" via a link in the Contact Dashboard to a "hard-coded" form w/ basic organization info. However, if you or your organization would like to put resources into generalizing this a bit more so permissioned links could be provided to profile(s) - contact us on IRC or perhaps write up your proposed spec / blog about it etc.

This is a dialogue I need to watch, and hopefully help out with if we get a new client.

This discussion is informative but unfortunate: I have a number of clients that offer memberships specifically to organizations and who were planning to manage this via CiviCRM.

You can help fix the "unfortunate" part by contributing code / features that your clients require

There is a simple workaround!

The earlier statement claiming that CiviCRM doesn't "currently handle an Organization creating a contribution or signing up for a membership online" isn't entirely true. More accurately, the CiviContribute page filters out profiles that are not of the same type as the logged in user.

So, to allow users to operate as Organizations, including signing up for memberships, take advantage of the cType hack described here:
http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,93.msg319.html#msg319

One could also create Drupal users from one's Organizations to get similar results for extant contacts. Once the Drupal user is associated with a CiviCRM Organization contact record, then they will be able to use CiviContribute / CiviMember pages with the associated Organization profiles.

Note that CiviCRM is taking a much more sophisticated approach to address this issue in 2.1:
http://civicrm.org/node/352

But if you want this to work with Drupal 5, then the cType hack is the way to go.

Someone pointed this out to me:

If you use the ctype hack to create an organization from Drupal, be aware if you need to delete the "contact" you need to manually delete it from both Drupal and CiviCRM.
