Family Membership --> Individual Membership Getting Funky
February 21, 2014, 06:44:17 pm
I hope this makes sense:

In our system we have family memberships - which can be shared - and individual memberships - which aren't shared. A member recently switched from a family membership, with a family member 'attached' to their membership, to an individual membership. Strangely, the family member who was attached to the family membership is still attached to the new individual membership. I figured that the dependent member would simply be listed as having no membership, alas. Is there some setting in the deep, dark recesses of civi that I haven't checked or something?

Any help on this is very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Bobby

hi

I think I might be able to help if we can confirm a few things.

unless you have some special sauce going on, ususally memberships can't be shared - they can be inherited

if a membership is inherited via  relationship then persons with the right relationship become a related member

I don't know how you have people 'switching' memberships.

Probably helps to throw some screenshots our way

Pete:
In our system family memberships can be 'shared' in that there is a primary member and members 'by relationship.' Some members, typically upon renewal, switch the type of membership they have - often they switch from individual to family, or from a 1yr to a 3yr, for example.

In this situation, the member in question (see attached image) was a member 'by relationship' on a family membership. Last month, the primary member switched their membership type to an individual membership. Strangely, the member by relationship is still counted as a member but on the primary member's new individual membership.

Thanks for your patience, I'm trying to explain this stuff as clearly as I can.

Mahalo,

Bobby

Am guessing this is a factor that wasn't not taken in to account when the option to let someone change their membership type but keep their membership continuous as opposed to ending one relationship and starting another was added.

Do you have some coding resources to put towards a solution? If so I would get them on IRC and discuss the fix that is required there.

sounds like when a change of Membership Type happens it needs to check if the new type provides for 'inherited' and if it doesn't, and then update things to terminate the old inherted one
