Are there any file size limits to CiviMail?
April 25, 2008, 02:28:02 pm
One of our users is reporting that messages are being truncated. I have not tried to reproduce but first wanted to check to see if there are any known limits to the size of a CiviMail message.

The document in question was a 71.5 kb file that was uploaded. A 63.2 kb file was not truncated.

I haven't seen any comments on this. Should I create an issue?

hey dennis:

can you run a few tests with different message sizes and see if you can reproduce the below issue on your install

might help us narrow down the issue. As far as we are aware, CiviMail does not impose any restrictions on size of messages. There are quite a few components involved in the mail delivery process which could also be responsible

If you can narrow it down a bit more, it will help us significantly

thanx

Its related to Mysql text field limit.
I filed an issue for 2.1 http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-3039.

The it says the fix went into 2.1 but I can't find anything in the work log that says what was fixed. I can certainly reproduce it and the message always gets truncated at 64K.

My production is 1.9. My laptop has 2.0 and I have not tried it on the laptop.

It means it will be fixed in CiviCRM 2.1, which is not released yet.

If you need the fix in an earlier version, the relevant commit is 14133 – the fix seems quite simple: http://fisheye.civicrm.org/changelog/CiviCRM/?cs=14133
If you found the above helpful, please consider helping us in return – you can even steer CiviCRM’s future and help us extend CiviCRM in ways useful to you.

Thanks, Piotr. I think we can live with this limit.

Many of our users sending email are using Microsoft Word to compose then save as HTML to get around the quirkiness of the wysiwig. Word adds a lot of superfluous code which bloats the message. There is a way to save a Word document that filters out some of that code and doing that reduced the size of the message in question.

Our people are not all technical and it would be hard to train them how to use another HTML editor.

Dennis - We are pretty far along w/ integrating 2 new options for WYSIWYG editing in CiviMail (and other spots in CiviCRM). So 2.1 should include options to use etiher FCKEditor or TinyMCE. I think both of them have "Paste from MS Word" features - which I guess clean-up the code - so that should help your folks going forward :-)
