Can CiviCRM Do All of These Things?
March 09, 2014, 05:13:41 pm
Hi,

My non-profit is in the process of looking for a CRM that will fit our needs.  CiviCRM looks like a good fit, but we have a few questions. I believe it can do most of what's listed below based on the demo and information on the website.  Mainly, we want our constituents and members to be able to update and submit information in the the database via their on login accounts. Can this be done with CiviCRM? Generally speaking, we need the following features:

1. Membership Management
    a. Recurring Membership Payment
    b. Member login and self - renewal
    c. Automated membership renewal emails
    d. Membership discount codes
    e. Ability to provide a name for each membership purchases
    f.  Ability to print temporary membership card via pdf email
    g. Front end Membership Directory w/Photos

2. Donations/Sponsorship
    a. Recurring Donations
    b. In Memory/Honor of Section
    c. Custom receipt letters via email/pdf
    d. Multiple donation options on one donation form
    e. Ability to create several individual donation forms
    f.  Ability to self check donation/sponsorship history

3. Volunteer/Group Management
    a. Custom sign up form
    b. Job, shift, and hours worked tracking
    c. Ability to self-check and edit volunteer assignment, volunteer history, or group assignment
    d. Ability to target email volunteers/groups

4. Form Building
    a. Ability to make custom forms and keep data in database

5. Email management for blasts and one off emails to groups and individuals
    a. Customizable email templates
    b. Email to groups, individuals
    c. Bounce, link clicks, and opens tracking

6. Events
    a. Printable & scannable tickets sent via email
    b. Scannable ticket to auto update attendance status
    c. Ability to self-check past and current event registrations
    d. Ability to add names to a multiple ticket purchase
    e. Discount options with start and end date
    f.  Upcoming events and events calendar on front end of website

7. Contacts
    a.  Individual/Organization Contacts group and tagged
    b.  Activity tracking
    c.  Households/Relationship Tracking
    e.  De-duping
    f.   Contact types/categories (student, volunteer, board member, etc)
    g.  Sync contacts with CMS (Drupal or Joomla! for us)

Thank you for your feedback.

Hi there,

I agree with your assumption that CiviCRM can do most of the things on your list. Remarks:
1.e and 1.f I am not sure what you want there, so I can not give a definite yes or no
2.a You probably want to use the Recurring Payment extension for recurring donation. You can find it in the extensions list on the CiviCRM website
3. You need to carefully study what CiviVolunteer extension can do for you, I think your wishes will be covered.
4. What CMS are you using? If you are using Drupal, then the WebForm - CiviCRM module will be very useful.

Thank you Erik,

We are using Joomla! but can switch to Drupal.  There is a bit more of a learning curve for our staff with Drupal and we're keeping an eye out for the updates to Drupal 8.

Also, can you speak to these needs?  I haven't been able to find much information:

6. Events
    a. Printable & scannable tickets sent via email
    b. Scannable ticket to auto update attendance status

Thanks again for your reply.

I know that there has been some work on event badges, but I am not sure if it is a public extension yet. It was demonstrated at the latest CiviCon in London. So I think it can be done, I am just not 100% sure about the specifics.

Erik,

Thank you again. Your answers have been very helpful.  One other issue came up concerning the rather 'plain/bland' automatic pdf receipts that are sent out for donations, memberships, events etc.  Are those customizable in terms of lay out and format? The content is fine.  We'd just like to refine the look.

Thanks

You will find the receipts at Administer>CiviMail>Message Templates>System Workflow Messages.

All these receipts can be customised, but you may need to learn some Smarty2  (www.smarty.net).

The pdf receipts use the HTML format.

I have another question:  How does CiviCRM handle recurring payments for Memberships and Contributions?

Thanks!

Do you mean "How does it?" or "Can it?"

The answer to both is "It depends what payment gateway you use."

I do mean 'how' as well as which gateways?   By 'how', I mean will it automatically log each payment or is there some manual entry that has to be done.  We have Pay Pal Pro.  Will that work?  What other gateways will work?

Thanks

See http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Payment+Processors  for a start, but not sure if it is up-to-date.

If you have a particular payment processor in mind and it is not on the list then post to the forum as a double check.
