Need Text field in profile

I need to add a profile to a contribution page that allows the contributor to enter text. In this case it is a student name or  External I.D. number that they wish to sponsor. I can manually create the relationship, but need them to be able to tell me which student they wish to sponsor with their recurring donation.

You can create a custom field and add it to a profile used on that contribution page.
Seems like a case for a contactReference type field.

Thanks, but I don't think the contact reference will recognize an external ID, which I use for the students.
