Organizations and Child Contacts
May 29, 2007, 01:56:19 pm
Hi folks,

We are new to CiviCRM and need to setup a system where the primary members of the client are organizations (ie joe's consultancy, big red gum company, etc...) Each one of these member org's will have "child" contacts, like Bob, Sue, and Jim, who are to have logins and passwords of their own to access "member's only" content in Drupal. Has anyone else done a similar implementation, and what would be a "best practice" way of accomplishing this?

Thanks in advance,
Dan

Dan - You'll probably want to use Relationships (Employee <-> Employer) to connect the Organizations to their "children".

Limiting access to content is something that needs to happen in Drupal - so perhaps others can chime in on how they've done this. One possible approach is to assign a Drupal role to users based on a defined action in CiviCRM. I can't really get more specific as I'm not sure how you will be defining "membership".

If you're planning on using CiviMember to track memberships - there are limitations to what CiviMember functionality (particularly online membership signup/renewal) IF the "members" are organizations rather than individuals. Please check out this recent discussion:

Thanks Dave. The post you linked to essentially answered my question.
