Amount missing from memberships import

I just created an import csv file for past membership data, and the field matching stage does not let me match the amount paid to anything. I had previously imported memberships without payment data, and noticed that this was missing compared to memberships entered by other methods.

Amounts paid are imported via Import contributions.   Membership type and start/end dates are imported via Import Memberrships

You can't link them through the UI. 

http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,19322.msg132154.html  deals with linking them via other means.
