I am also seeing an answer to this question.

I'd also like to know if current users have experienced any compatibility issues with 4.4.x versions.

Google Apps sync has already been ported to 4.4 and is in production with my customers.
The code is on github: https://github.com/cividesk/sync.googleapps
cividesk -- CiviCRM delivered ... your way!
