A member signs up for a one-month, rolling, auto-renewing membership online, with associated recurring contribution (member dues).  In the back-office someone goes into the membership record and attempts to edit a custom field associated with the membership (this is a field that records the date the member attended an orientation session).

This triggers a "duplicate membership" error saying that the member already has a membership of this type, and offering two options: renew the existing membership or view a list of existing memberships for this contact (of which there is only one). 

Is this a bug?  Shouldn't I be able to edit a custom field associated with the membership without being forced to renew the membership (which should be autorenewing monthly, anyway).

I tried to reproduce on the demo site but couldn't set up exactly the same scenario because I don't know how to do a recurring credit card membership on the demo site (what dummy credit card number to use?).
