I am trying to figure out how to set up confirmations for subscribers of newsletters. I would like at least a confirmation email to user, and even better the ability to confirm the subscription.

I've set this up using Profiles and a group called 'newsletter'.

Also testing shows that duplicate email addresses are accepted. Is there a way to reject if already subscribed?

I think creating a smart group rather than a normal group would solve the problem of duplicate email addresses.

Re the confirmation emails - this is an offbeat suggestion from someone who can't code and therefore has to adapt what is available - instead of using profiles would you be able to set up each type of newsletter as an 'event'. People would register for the newsletter 'event' and and receive an email confirmation of their registration.

You would need to customise the System Workflow Message template called Events - Registration Confirmation and Receipt (on-line) to make a suitable confirmation email, but that can be done through the UI.

Thanks for this suggestion. It sort of works although the event confirmation email is a bit strange even when customized as much as possible for a newsletter. The shortcode works in a page in wordpress but not in a widget which is how I need it to work. Pretty good workaround.
