Two Smart Groups have totally different search criteria UI's, why?
April 09, 2014, 03:38:22 pm
With CiviCRM 4.1.3 on Drupal 6, a number of Groups and Smart Groups are set up. Two are the focus of attention presently which the UI states are Smart Groups. Within the Settings screen of the Smart Group I then click "Edit Smart Group Criteria". On that screen I open the twisty "Edit Search Criteria" and there is a single combo box control "Contact Type" in both of these groups I need to edit the settings of.

Usually I see a much more complex search UI with various sections of search criteria: Advanced Search \ Basic Criteria \ Address Fields \ Custom Fields \ etc...

Is there a way to toggle Smart Groups to use a simple or advanced search UI?

I believe I need these two groups which have the simple search UI to have the advanced search UI as the request is to search based on having interacted with the contact within the past n years, and merely a "Contact Type" combo box is not going to accomplish that objective. Suggestions?

I am thankful,

Hi Michael,

The search UI is tied to the search used when the smart group was created - which makes sense, since there's plenty of searches that can be done using Search Builder (or custom searches) that can't be represented in Advanced Search.

Someone more clever than me might have a suggestion involving changing a value in the civicrm_saved_search table, but I think your best bet would be to just create a new smart group using Advanced Search.

Greetings Jon,

hhhmmm... Wonder how it was ever suppose to search based on "having been contacted within the past n years" if the only criteria is the one combo box.

Very well then, I will take your suggestion of simply building new smart groups and see if we arrive at success that way rather than editing the smart groups present.

I am thankful,

All right, question on Smart Group capabilities since I am going to build brand new Advanced Search Smart Groups:

I see in the CiviCRM 4.1.3 Advanced Search ways to perform date calculations based on entering a static date. Is there a way to create a Smart Group which will always calculate "currentdate - n years" so that it is not necessary to update the settings of the Smart Group before using the Smart Group for a task? Or is it necessary to first edit the settings of the Smart Group, then go use the Smart Group?

I am thankful,

Greetings Jon,

Thank you so much for providing the link to the announcement to the capability we are seeking. I have asked for an outage this weekend to perform a Civi upgrade in order to gain that new capability.

I am thankful,
