Can we expand the current test data?
April 12, 2014, 08:08:09 pm
I have started documenting some of the 4.5 features in the user and admin book.  To do this I have needed to use sandbox to test out the functionality.

I have found that the memberships and events that come as standard are not sufficient to test things properly.  I have created new memberships and price sets to test the new features and in doing so have found a couple of bugs and reported them.

Being newish to all this the first time I gave a url for the problem page in my comment and of course, by the time someone got to the issue 3 weeks later sandbox had been reset.

The second time around I included screenshots that show the problem, but of course, by the time someone gets to it sandbox will have been reset and they will have to recreate the price set needed to reproduce the problem.

Is it feasible to extend the current test data set to include more of the features that people use?

I don't know exactly what is involved,  but I would be happy to help in any way that I can given my extremely limited coding abilities.

This is a very good suggestion. I also found the sample data lacking when I wrote up these 2 pages of exercises for a 2 day training:
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/User+and+Administrator+Training+Exercises+Day+1
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/User+and+Administrator+Exercises+-+Day+2

Some of the exercises refer to sample data that is no longer there because I set it up on the demo copy we were using at the time.
For example I think this is one of them: (There are no Event templates in the sample data)
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/User+Exercise-Create+an+event+based+on+an+existing+template+and+test+drive+it

The sample data seems to be in sql/civicrm_generated.mysql and it looks like it is generated from https://github.com/civicrm/civicrm-core/blob/master/sql/sample_data.xml.
I'm not sure what would be involved in updating it.

Just wanting to say I would really like to put some time into this if it is thought to be a good idea.  I have had the sand box reset twice lately when I have been in the middle of testing a bug and testing for writing documentation.

The first things I would like to include would be:
  • 2 or 3 fixed terms memberships one with fixed period start/rollover dates
  • price sets on contribution pages (for events/membership)
