Could we move the the date range settings to a better location
April 13, 2014, 06:42:20 am
NOTE "I am starting this topic because I was looking to improve the documentation on the Advanced Date Input Settings and it just seems out of place if I try to put it were it "belongs" based on its menu location

CiviCRM lets you set the range of dates allowed for various field types at Administer > Localization > Date Format and open  Advanced Date Input Settings.

IMO this is bad place for it to be for two reasons.
  • It is too well hidden.  I think this is the only place in the Administer menu where you don't really know what is there until you click on the link on a page. This makes it easy to overlook and also means that an admin person is unlikely to think "I've seen something about that on one of the admin pages" if they encounter an error such as:

Date must be between 01-01-1993 and 12-31-2033 when doing membership searches on member since date.

  • I don't really think it belongs under Localisation.  I understand why it was put there - as well as setting date ranges you can customize the date format and setting the default date format does belong under Localization as it will depend on the country/language of the installation.  However I suspect that choosing a date input type other than the default would be fairly unusual ( except for CC of course) and then it would probably be something like collecting only month and year for Date of birth.  That is really a decision about what data to collect not a localisation issue.

I think the the Settings - Date Preferences page actually belongs under Customize Data and Screens underneath, say, Search preferences.

What do others think?

Thanks for posting this. I totally agree.

I was trying to figure out how to enter birthdates for a few individuals over 100 and was struggling to find the settings. It wasn't until I found this post that I realized these settings were even here!

I think these Advanced options would be better located in the "Customize Data and Screens" category under a "Date Settings" or "Date Options" heading.

Suggestions make sense. JoAnne - you can file an issue for 4.6 (and if you're feeling adventurous take it on after we branch 4.5 in a week or so).
