Limit Activity "Assigned to" field

Hi CiviCRM community!

Wonder if anyone has ever restricted the activity "Assigned to" field to a group of contacts (as you can do with other contact reference fields). Or any pointers where we could have a go at making this happen?

We work with someone who has 1,000s of contacts and they are worried someone will accidently assign it to someone external when it should only be a member of staff.
