I think I fell foul of making up Smart Groups to limit my DeDupe run. I saw a couple of places where it suggested reducing TimeOut errors by just running on particular groups by adding &GID='##'

So I tried but got nowhere. Then I figured maybe it was cause I used Smart Groups. And on Demo I tested it with Adams Family and Adams not smart Family - and got the duplicates I expected on the latter but not on the former.

I have added a rider to the Tip at http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Find+Duplicate+Contacts

NOTE: This will only work with Standard Groups - i.e. it will not work with Smart Groups.

If I am correct then I will make the effort of adding that to other threads in this forum on this issue.

And before you ask why I was trying with Smart Groups - because that is what you can do from 'more actions' though I believe you have put have 'add to new group' in the more actions in 2.1

Yes, it seems the group limiting of dedupe in CiviCRM 2.0 works only with standard (non-smart) groups. We hope to fix it in 2.1, but it might get pushed to a later release.

Lobo just added code to make smart groups handling transparent (from the point of view of dedupe – CRM-3082), so this will be fixed in CiviCRM 2.1.
