I think I must be missing something here.

I have created a group "subscribe to the newsletter" and set it's visibility to "Public User Pages"
I then added  to the "Contact Information" profile a new field  Field Name: "Individuals"   "group/s" and use this profile on the user registration page.

This gives users that register the option to subscribe to the newsletter by adding themselves to the "subscribe to the newsletter" group.

What I would like is to have is "subscribe to the newsletter" selected by default and allow people to deselect it if they wish.

I know I can create "custom data" with a yes/no select box and have this defaulted to yes and use it in the profile but that won't add people to a "group" it will only add that custom data to the individuals profile.

How can I achieve "subscribe" by default usings groups. Or should I be doing things a different way using a "custom data" field??
