I have seen this once before, and it was traced back to the URL changing between pages.  In that case they were going from an http page to an https page, although I could imagine the same occurring if you switch between www.mysite.com and mysite.com (or vice versa).  Are either of these occurring?

This is also an issue for 4.5.4 and WP 4. I am considering filing a bug on this. It would be nice to have a workaround other than a written apology and explanation at the top of the sign up form.

before filing an issue:

a. please try and reproduce on our demo servers

b. if a is not possible, try posting on the forums with a very specific sequence of steps

thanx

As far as I know, you can't do much with payment processors like PayPal standard on the demos. So can't test. The problem occurs when the user clicks the PayPal link to return to the site. That's pretty much it on steps to reproduce.

u can try using civicrm.org (its giving tuesday after all!) and see how the paypal standard feature works there

https://civicrm.org/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=67

quite a few folks are using PP standard, so i think it might be a site specific / setting issue

FWIW, I'm also getting error consistently on a membership page after confirm and before Thank you on a site where event registration pages properly send the user off to PayPal Standard. I'll post back with our results.

We encountered same problem. and got it solved by fixing merchant parameters. Some merchants have limitation of number of char in the paramlist based on the parameter you supply. for eg name=50 char, return_url=100 etc.... Some time if any parameter value length gets more than the limit merchant automatically truncates it. So on returning when you process the URL it is not what you expect and get this error. for eg. in our scenario

We were giving return_url=http://www.xxxxxxx.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/CCAvenueNotify.php?reset=1&contactID=3487&contributionID=112&contributionTypeID=1&module=contribute&qfKey=b8a0de4ca148eeb449326d6359d  this was getting truncated by merchant So when returning when we process it civi did not find it and raised the error.
