All CiviCRM-generated pages redirect to home page
May 08, 2014, 01:35:43 pm
Totally new to CiviCRM - I just installed it on an existing WordPress site. Installation went fairly smoothly, but when I created a petition or an event, the urls that CiviCRM generates for signing the petition or registering for the event all redirect to the splash page of the website (i.e. do not take you to a petition page or an event registration page).

Here is the site: http://bostonracialjustice.org/
Here is the petition link, which does not work: http://bostonracialjustice.org/?page=CiviCRM&q=civicrm/petition/sign&sid=1&reset=1
Here is the event link, ditto: http://bostonracialjustice.org/?page=CiviCRM&q=civicrm/event/register&reset=1&id=1

It appears that CiviCRM is not processing any query strings in the url... I've only been able to find one reference to this problem in the forums, but the person reporting the problem fixed it by completely reinstalling WordPress and CiviCRM:

This is an option I'd like to avoid, since I'm working with a live WordPress site.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Re: All CiviCRM-generated pages redirect to home page

I figured this out on my own. CiviCRM defaults to using the home page as a template and fills in its own content for events, petitions, etc. However, the WordPress theme I was using - Responsive (the most common WordPress theme) - overrides the home page, so CiviCRM events were just showing a totally unmodified home page.

Fixed this by creating a "CiviCRM Base Page" in WordPress, which I left empty, then setting Administer->System Settings->CMS Database Integration->WordPress Base Page to use this page instead.

Hope this is helpful for someone in the future. It strikes me as awfully weird to default to using the home page as a template, given how many home pages have a totally different design from internal pages (which is what you'd want to mimic with an event, petition, survey, etc).
