Drupal 8 or Wordpress?
May 12, 2014, 05:31:17 pm
Okay,

My organization is still evaluating CiviCRM and it looks like CiviCRM will win against Salesforce.  We really like the fact that constituents can login and see transaction, membership, and other activity histories.

Now we are trying to figure out which CMS is best. We are most familiar with Joomla, but have been looking at WP for is easy blog posting and have also been looking at Drupal 8's list of new features.

The question is:  Looking specifically at Drupal 8's feature set vs. that of Wordpress is there a recommendation of one over the other? Security? Any issues, concerns, or points to note?

Thanks

Eileen

I think you will find it very hard to get an unbiased answer to that question. What is your timeframe, however? Drupal 8 won't be stable until the end of this year.

In Drupal 7 the 'killer features' have been views & Webform integrations. With drupal 8 the views integration should be much the same - however, the future of webform is uncertain (it might be replaced by another drupal feature). In Wordpress there are moves afoot to integrate with Gravity Forms but the Webform form-builder style integration is not there as yet.

I think both Drupal and Wordpress are very secure well supported platforms. The Drupal community & support is more extensive - but Drupal 8 is still not out so that is less clear.

Also, worth noting that if you are looking for a long-term implementation you have plenty of time to fund features into the next release if there are missing features that are important enough to you for you to fund them

Thanks Eileen,

We could wait for Drupal 8...as long as it is out by the end of the year.  Also looking at adding Drupal Commons. It seems much better than BuddyPress in the area of user permissions. Perhaps waiting is the best move.

Would a Drupal 8 version of CiviCRM be out by the end of the year?  We would hate to pay for a fresh Drupal 7 site to be able to use CiviCRM, just to want a Drupal 8 site the next year.

There is a google  project sponsored by Google in the Google Summer of Code project to do the Drupal 8 integration. I am actually one of the mentors of this project and the 'student' is my colleague who has been working with CiviCRM for a few years & returned to university this year to do some more study.

I have a lot of confidence that we will have a pretty reasonable drupal 8 integration by the end of the GSOC project. If you have any resources you can put into downloading it, testing & feeding back during this period it would be great - we don't have an 'organisational mentor' on this project - not sure if we can add one formally at this stage but would certainly be keen informally.

My expectation is that Drupal 8 will be released as a stable release around the end of the year.

Would love to help, but we are new to Drupal and would have to learn it to be of any real use feedback wise.  Our site is currently in Joomla.

Given this, if we can be of help, please let us know.

Well - if you are keen to download drupal 8 with CiviCRM & try to get it to run in 2 months or so that would be great!

Drupal 7 ( or 8 ) is more powerful and configurable.  WordPress has fewer features but is easier to use and cheaper to maintain.   Like any tool choice, the "best" depends on your purposes.    What ususally tips the scales for me towards Drupal is that CiviCRM.org uses Drupal, the "core team" of developers generally favor Drupal heavily and the number of Civi sites using Drupal is about twice the number of Civi sites using Wordpress and Joomla combined.  This means better and longer support for the Drupal + Civi combo.
