Any ideas why the column "Month"-New/Renew (MTD) in civimember always says 0? Can it be that we have a fixed membership period of 1 year so that everyone has January 1st as their start date?

I think that's the reason. The count is the # of memberships with "Start Date" in that month. Since your memberships are fixed, the start dates I presume are all in January. For your case, having that count based on Join Date might be better. (Of course you can always get this from Find Members.)
