[SOLVED] Accidentally tested "Unsubscribe" link..
June 04, 2014, 09:04:34 am
I sent myself a test email before sending out a mailing, and in the process of double-checking all of my links accidentally clicked on the "unsubscribe" link I had included. Now I get no emails from Civi, and can't find where I change that. Any help is appreciated!

Congratulations--your unsubscribe feature works!   ;)

It depends upon the token you used in that link.  If it was an actual unsubscribe token, you simply removed yourself from whatever group you received the mailing through.  Go to your contact record and go to the groups tab, and you'll see yourself removed from the group.  You can just click Rejoin.

On the other hand, it sounds like you actually clicked a link generated by the opt out token.  This sets the "NO BULK EMAILS (user opt out)" checkbox in your communication preferences.  Just go to your contact record, click Edit, and uncheck that box.

If neither work, try going to your contact record and then selecting Send an Email from the Actions button.  If you don't get anything, then it's unrelated to your unsubscribing yourself: unlike "do not email", which blocks all email to a contact, "NO BULK EMAILS" simply excludes bulk emails through CiviMail.

Best of luck!

Andrew

The token I used was "{action.unsubscribeURL}", and I wasn't a member of any of the groups to which I was sending the email. I checked under Communication Preferences, and the "NO BULK EMAILS" wasn't checked. Sending an email through the Actions button doesn't work either. Any more thoughts?

I think this may be a coincidence, then: the Send an Email feature under Actions doesn't pay attention to either opt-out or unsubscribing (which just affects your membership in the one group).

Is your email On Hold all of a sudden?

You should also try going to the Outbound Mail admin page and clicking Save and Send Test Email.

If you have access to the mail log on your server (/var/log/mail.log or equivalent), you might check that.

My email's not On Hold. I can send emails from Civi with no problem, either.

I'm afraid I'm not sure how to get to the Outbound Mail page..? or how to access the mail log. Slight newbie at this all (I mean, I clicked my own unsubscribe link for crying out loud).

No problem: Administer - System settings - Outbound Email.  There's an option to save and send yourself a message.   If you're not getting that (and it's not sending to somebody else), and it's sending okay to others, the problem is outside of CiviCRM.

Another way to test it is to create a new contact with your email address and send a message to them using Send an Email.  If you don't receive it, that also indicates that the problem is with your email address specifically.

It seems like the problem is on my end, then. The save-and-send Outbound Email option got me nothing, and the fake contact with my email likewise didn't get a test email.

Our emails are hosted through Gmail. I wonder if they block all incoming mail from an address, once a user clicks an unsubscribe link..?

Another one of our Civi administrators tried sending an email from the Outbound Mail save-and-sent test emailer, and didn't receive anything - but she hasn't been having any problems with receiving Civi emails.

Photo attached of the Outbound Mail screen. Am I doing it wrong?

It's a SendGrid fix, in case this ever happens to anyone else.

Good find!  Out of curiousity, was it that SendGrid understood the CiviMail unsubscribe link to be an unsubscribe, or was it an unsubscribe link that SendGrid inserted?

I think the former. Our tech wizards said I ended up on the SendGrid unsubscribe list. So that's marvelously wrapped up!
