What does CiviMember Role Sync actually do?

After reading other people's advice in these forums, I've installed the Members plugin and Tadpole's CiviMember Role Sync. I've added the rules to associate my WP roles with my membership types, but when I click Manually Synchronize, nothing seems to happen. I was expecting Role Sync to change the roles of matching WP users (that is, users whose email addresses match those of members in Civi). Am I missing something?

UPDATE: The plugin wasn't doing anything because the WP users were not properly sync'd with Civi contacts. See http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,32779.msg140561.html

However, after fixing that problem I have the same issue as this unsolved post (roles set to "None"): http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,29829.msg127780.html

UPDATE

I posted this issue on Tadpole's github: https://github.com/tadpolecc/civi_member_sync/issues/3

From the responses there you can see there is an alternative role sync plugin, but I haven't tested it yet: https://github.com/christianwach/civicrm-wp-member-sync
