CiviMember - Free membership renewal?
May 08, 2008, 02:38:34 am
I don't know if this is already possible in some way. If it is please tell me where to look.

Our memberships are free and members are not registered drupal users... ie. they cannot log in to renew.

Dream scenario:

1. Send out renewal reminders to all members using email and/or sms.

2. The mail contains a unique personal link that when the user clicks it renews the membership, notifies admin and sends a thank you mail.

3.  Wait until next years renewal and repeat procedure.

Anyone else interested in something like this?

we can do item 1 via email

item 2 is currently not possible without a login. Using unique personal links are not the most secure mechanism, and hence i'm not sure we'll go down that path

Any other suggestions on how to allow people to renew their memberships without requiring a login?

CiviCRM uses the email address to link an anonymous user with a preexisting record in CiviCRM. Obviously that's not a perfect connector solution, but is fairly effective in getting the job done -- definitely not as good as if someone actually logs in. But theoretically, if you have a member who "re-joins" using the generic member signup form, and uses the same email address, that record will be treated as a renewal to an existing record.

In other words, you don't "need" a unique url back to the user. Though using the built-in anonymous user system is subject to weaknesses, depending on the consistency of your end user (their consistent use of the same email address).
